Description
Dracula was a heck of a good vampire story, but when Bram Stoker wrote bats into his tale, he did a real disservice to our fuzzy flying friends. Far from evil, bats are gentle, sociable mammals (nope, not rodents) that play an essential role in controlling pests, pollinating plants, and dispersing seeds—in other words, just the type of critters you want in your backyard! Led by the expert team at Re:wild, an organization focused on building a thriving planet where all life can flourish, this live virtual experience tells the real story about bats and why they’re so incredible—and important. Once you know the why, this class will show you the how, with an expert-guided workshop to help you assemble your own backyard bat house, customized to your geographic region. Renowned bat advocates and experts Amanda Vicente-Santos or Dave Waldien will kick things off by sharing fascinating information and stories about bats—and squashing all those nasty rumors. Next, Andrew Snyder, Re:wild’s Key Biodiversity Area Coordinator, helps you build your bat house while explaining the benefits of keeping bats close to home (hint: just one bat can eat up to 15,000 mosquitos per night!). Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions along the way and share their own experiences with these nocturnal navigators—what Andrew calls "bat banter." Class will wrap up with tips on how to custom-finish your bat house to meet the roosting needs of the types of bats in your specific neck of the woods. For every class purchased, Uncommon Goods will donate $5 to Re:wild to support their mission to protect and restore the wild. Class length: 60 minutes. Comes with the class: Our Backyard Bat House Kit has all the components you’ll need and is exclusively available with purchase of this experience. Experiences make great gifts!
